From 2009 to 2017 he was chairman oft he Social Democratic Party of Germany and since 2005 he is a directly elected member of the German Bundestag. He was a member oft he Cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merksel from 2005 to 2009 as Federal Minister fort he Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. From 2013 to 2017 he was Fenderal Minister of Economics and Energy and Vice Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Afterwards until 2018 he was Federal Foreign Minister.
